Godly Correction and Discipline (by Pastor David)

Godly Correction and Discipline (by Pastor David)

What is godly correction and discipline?

Sunday’s service especially hit home for me as it touched on what I believe is a core ingredient and a necessity for walking the narrow path. it was a down to earth teaching service on Godly correction buttressed by practical testimonials as well as the live demonstration of God’s love in discipline and correction. 1st John 4:18 clearly reminds us that there is absolutely no fear in love and as we know, God is love.

‘There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and the one who fears has not been made perfect in love’. 1 John 4:18

As such God’s correction and discipline is meant to keep us on the narrow path. Like the pruning of a tree, God’s discipline when we choose to accept and walk in it removes the dead weight of sin and distraction that hinder us from being His true ambassadors and what He has called us to be. God’s correction does not bring us to a place of harm and/or fear but rather a place of love, freedom, and intimacy with Him.

What is the purpose of Godly correction and discipline?

If Godly correction, chastening, and disciplining leads us to a place of anger, revolt and negativity instead of repentance, then it is a reflection of our current state which is not in alignment with God and His Spirit in us. In short, when we fight back Godly correction, it’s a sign that we are not aligned with God. For God corrects those He loves (Proverbs 3:11-12) and those led by the Spirit are the true sons/daughters of God. Like David under rebuke by the prophet Nathan, let’s be quick to accept due correction and press on in faith.
