To Be Salt and Light
This Sunday’s service was about Yeshua teaching His disciples and us about being Salt and light to the world. The message based on Matthew 5:13-16 hit home for me.
Salt
What is the purpose of salt? It is most well known as a food preservative and flavouring. As a Christian, to be salt is to be genuine, have unconditional love and good moral standards. People around us can enjoy the “salt” when we smile, give a helping hand, perform acts of kindness etc. But we can also be salty if we turn a blind eye to the culture or have a mentality of me, myself and I, or by hiding the goods, you have been given. We should be careful not to lose our flavour by not losing sight of Yeshua.
Light
Light is a symbol used to mean awareness, knowledge, and understanding. We are the light of the world, and as a church, we need to stand up and fight for God in the word, not to impose our beliefs on people but to show Christ in us. We need to show the Zoey of God, which is the abundant life of God. Likewise, we are the light of the world, and like a lighthouse, we are to shine. How do we do that? By turning our attention to God in times of trouble and shining when it is inconvenient, and living like we are God’s favourite.
As I reflect on this message, the song by “The City Harmonic – A City On A Hill” encapsulates the message very well. As in Matthew 5:13-16, let’s make sure we are the salt & light in our daily lives.
